What Is Female Infertility?

/

Infertility occurs when a couple under the age of 35 cannot conceive a child after one year of trying. For patients over 35, this timeframe is shortened to about six months. Female infertility occurs when female reproductive issues are preventing conception or a healthy pregnancy.

Causes of Infertility in Women

There are many potential causes of female infertility. Common causes include:

Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, affecting organs such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. This can impact ovulation, the ability of sperm to fertilize the egg, and the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Ovulation Issues

Ovulation disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can make conception difficult. PCOS can result in a range of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, hormone imbalances, and irregular ovulation.

Medical Conditions

Medical conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, autoimmune disorders, cancer, diabetes, and more can cause reproductive issues and make conception a struggle.

Structural Concerns

Structural concerns such as fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes, and other structural defects of the uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes can be a factor in infertility.

Age

As a woman ages, the quality and quantity of her eggs diminishes. Aging can also impact the body's ability to release eggs or ovulate.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle choices can also impact fertility. Obesity, smoking, drinking, drug use, poor diet, and sexually transmitted diseases can all cause fertility problems.

Diagnosing Female Infertility

At Denver Fertility Care, we are committed to discovering the cause of your fertility struggles. If you have undergone testing with another doctor or fertility clinic, we try to avoid repeat testing. Be sure to bring any medical files or let us know who to contact so we can request this information before your appointment.
Each patient is unique, and we take an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment.

Consultation

During your initial consultation at our Denver or Englewood offices, you will meet with Dr. Ambler or Ellen DiSesa, NP. You will discuss your history, symptoms, and concerns to determine an appropriate course of action. If you have symptoms such as pain during or after intercourse, or painful and heavy periods, please let your doctor know.

Physical Exam

A physical exam is often performed to determine if there are any obvious causes of infertility, such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Your doctor may also order a semen analysis from your partner to rule out male factor infertility.

Blood Work

Blood work is often the next step. This gives your doctor an idea of your hormone levels. This also gives us a baseline for future treatments.

Ultrasound and Imaging

Ultrasounds and other imaging tests can help diagnose or rule out structural concerns. Our clinic uses FemVue instead of an HSG because it is a more comfortable method of checking for issues such as blocked fallopian tubes and fibroids. Ultrasounds combined with blood work can also determine the quantity and quality of your eggs.

Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Tracking

Tracking your menstrual cycle and ovulation at home is done in conjunction with blood work and imaging for a more complete picture of your reproductive health. Tracking your cycle also helps your doctor tailor treatment once you receive a diagnosis.
